AL: At what age did you start playing basketball?
JB: “The first organized basketball team I played on was
in 1st grade, but I’ve been around basketball my entire
life.”
AL: Did you grow up playing any other sports than basketball
or has basketball always been your main focus?
JB: “I pretty much played everything when I was younger
from baseball to football, soccer, swimming… and even piano.
My mom had a big influence on my life and she really wanted me
to be well-rounded, and find out for myself what I enjoyed most.
I played tight-end and defensive-end on the football team in grade
school. My freshman year in high school I had the opportunity
to start on the varsity basketball team, so at that point I decided
to focus only on basketball.”
AL: Do you think growing up as the youngest child has helped
your maturation as an athlete and fierce competitor?
JB: “It helped a lot growing up as the youngest in the family.
I could never beat my older brother Paul and sister Kirsten. Losing
to them would always give me a bitter taste and formed my competitive
spirit and drive to get better.”
AL: What was your favorite memory from your 4 years at Snohomish
High School?
JB: “Definitely going to the state tournament my freshman,
sophomore, and senior year. Those are memories I will never forget.
Our freshman year I got my first dunk against Garfield High School.
I think Brandon Roy scored 38 on us that game… I’m
glad he’s on my team now!”
AL: What High School All-Star games did you play in this past
spring? How would you describe your experiences there?
JB: “I got to play in the McDonald’s All-American
game, the Jordan Classic, and USA Hoops Summit vs. the World.
It was quite an honor to play with the best young players in the
world. Every game was a lot of fun, but to represent our country
in the USA Hoops Summit was probably the most exciting.”
AL: What were the deciding factors in choosing the University
of Washington over the other schools considered?
JB: “The people here at UW made me feel very comfortable
right from the beginning. Coach Romar was a major factor. Just
the overall person he is, both on and off the court. He’s
a class act and a great role model. I was also very impressed
when I visited Duke and UCLA and the great history surrounding
those 2 programs. Another reason that helped me choose UW was
the realization that I would be part of a team that is still forming
a great basketball tradition and building a dynasty, rather than
walking into a school that has always had that. Staying close
to home I also know that my family is always a short drive away.”
AL: What are your goals this year in your freshman season as
a Husky – both personal and team goals?
JB: “Whatever role I can play to give the Huskies the best
chance to win this year. I just want to go out every day and do
whatever I can to help make our team have a successful season.
I don’t really like to set personal goals. It’s my
goal every day to work as hard as I can to improve in every part
of my game, which will hopefully give our team a better chance
to win.”
AL: Do you have an athlete that you enjoy watching most or try
to model your game after?
JB: “Over the last couple years Ben Wallace (of the Detroit
Pistons) has become my favorite player to watch. I’ve love
rebounding and I love watching Wallace dominate the boards. He’s
relentless, hard-nosed, and he’s so strong”
AL: How has your faith in God impacted your perspective on life
both on and off the court?
JB: “It all ties in together. I feel very fortunate that
God has given me a talent to play basketball at a high level.
I know he has done that for a reason because a lot of younger
kids probably look up to me. I hope to be a good example to people
who watch me play. If I can portray Jesus Christ in my actions
on the court then people will hopefully take notice of that.”
Coach Romar on Jon Brockman
"A guy like Jon Brockman only comes around probably every
10 years. He is someone who is extremely talented, but also has
the work ethic, the character and every intangible you can imagine
to go along with it. Jon is a relentless worker that is a great
teammate. Guys like him just don't come around every day that
have that type of package. He has the willingness to do whatever
it takes to be the best, but yet he is still talented. Sometimes
you find that in guys that aren't as talented and they know that
is their only hope."
